The IRIG-B time code protocol is used in military, government, power industry, and many other commercial and industrial application to ensure precise time synchronization. Time information is pulse-width coded in either a BCD or binary format. Masterclock manufactures several devices that can generate IRIG-B time code.
Masterclock's newest master clock server, the GMR5000 can support and synchronize hundreds of thousands of NTP devices on a local area network (LAN) to act as an enterprise-wide source for traceable, accurate time and date distribution. It offers Secure-Socket-Host encryption and MD5 authentication to make communications secure. It can reference GPS, GLONASS, IRIG-B, or maintain its own time with a high-stability oscillator. The holdover stability of the standard TCXO is plus or minus three seconds per year when the timing reference is lost. With the proper distribution amplifiers, such as the TCA100, time code can be sent over long distances and connected in parallel to hundreds of clocks and other devices. It is generally an inexpensive, robust and reliable means of distributing time and date around a local plant or operation.
